What is Compare List?

Imagine you have two sticky notes full of names, words, or numbers. You want to quickly see which ones are on both notes, which ones are only on the first note, and which ones are only on the second note.

That’s exactly what Compare List does! It’s a free tool that looks at your two lists and shows you the matches and differences right away — like a super smart robot that never gets bored.

The best part? Everything stays on your computer. We never see your lists, and nothing is ever sent anywhere. It’s like a secret notebook that only you can open.

How to Compare Two Lists

  1. Write or paste your first list into the box called List A. Each item should be on its own line (like when you press Enter after each word).
  2. Do the same for your second list in the box called List B.
  3. Click the big red Compare Lists button. The tool will work its magic in less than a second!
  4. Look at the result boxes. You’ll see Only A (stuff just in the first list), Only B (stuff just in the second list), A and B (stuff in both), and A or B (everything combined, no repeats).
  5. Use the Copy button to grab any list and paste it into a document, email, or spreadsheet.

Don’t forget to check the Settings (⚙️) near the Compare button. You can tell the tool to ignore capital letters, trim extra spaces, or even sort the results for you.

What the Colors and Boxes Mean

After you compare, you’ll see a picture with two overlapping circles — like a Venn diagram. Here’s what it’s telling you:

  • A Only (blue box): Items that are in List A but not in List B. Feel free to copy them!
  • B Only (blue box): Items that are in List B but not in List A.
  • A ∩ B (pink box): Items that are in both lists. The ∩ symbol means “and”. Think of it like friends you both know!
  • A ∪ B (green box): All the different items from both lists, combined together without any repeats. The ∪ symbol means “or”. It’s like putting both sticky notes together and throwing away the copies.

The number inside the overlapping part of the diagram tells you how many items the two lists share. The bigger the number, the more they have in common!

Cool Things You Can Do

  • Clean up email lists: Find new people who signed up and remove folks who are already on your main list.
  • Check your toy collection: Compare what you have with what your friend has, and see which toys are missing.
  • Compare homework: Make sure your answers match the class list (but no cheating!).
  • Organize chores: Compare your to‑do list with your sibling’s and see who has extra jobs.
  • Plan a party: Find out which snacks both you and your friends like so everyone is happy.

Even adults use it for big stuff — like matching bank statements, checking customer lists, or fixing computer code. But the tool is so easy that anyone can use it!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my information safe?

Yes! 100% safe. Everything you type stays on your computer. We never see it, and it never travels over the internet. It’s like your data never leaves your house.

Do I need to pay or sign up?

Nope! It’s completely free, and you don’t need an account. Just open the page and start comparing.

What if I have a really long list?

The tool can handle thousands of lines without any problems. If your list is super huge (like more than a really big book), it might slow down a little, but for most things it’s lightning fast.

Can I make the words all look the same (uppercase / lowercase)?

Yes! Inside the Settings, you can choose to make everything UPPERCASE, lowercase, or even Title Case. That helps when you want the lists to look neat.

What if I don’t understand a button?

Every button has a little hint if you hover your mouse over it (or tap on a phone). And you can always ask an adult or use this guide to remember what everything does.
